Barcelona are increasingly concerned about Rodri’s ability to cope with the demands of regular first-team football after the midfielder suffered another physical setback against Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League.
Rodri arrived in Catalonia during last summer’s transfer window as one of the biggest signings in the club’s recent history. He joined with a formidable reputation after an exceptional World Cup and following a transfer saga in which Barcelona defeated their traditional rivals Real Madrid to secure his services.
The move created huge expectations around the Spain international, who was expected to become the new leader of Barcelona’s midfield. However, only a few months after his arrival, the initial excitement has gradually been replaced by concern.
There is no doubt about Rodri’s ability, but the midfielder has struggled to maintain his level through a sequence of matches, with physical problems continuing to interrupt his progress.
According to a report by Foot Mercato, the situation is now causing serious concern at Barcelona because Rodri was intended to be one of the central figures in the club’s project. On Tuesday night, the pattern repeated itself when he was forced to leave the pitch after starting the Champions League match against Aston Villa.
Mundo Deportivo reported that Rodri felt discomfort in his right hamstring. Barcelona’s coaching staff decided not to take any risks and replaced him.
The latest setback has come just days before an important fixture against Atletico Madrid. AS reported that there is genuine concern within Barcelona and that Rodri now appears very unlikely to feature in that match. Further tests are required to establish the seriousness of the problem, but his condition has already prompted questions in the Catalan media.
Rodri’s recurring fitness issues have become a wider concern since his move to Catalonia. Each time he appears close to reaching his best form, another injury has prevented him from building the consistency Barcelona had hoped to see.
In Spain, doubts are increasing over whether he can withstand a congested fixture schedule and recover the fitness required to secure a regular starting place. Since the beginning of the season, his manager Hansi Flick has worked to manage Rodri’s playing time and protect him as much as possible.
Even with those precautions, Foot Mercato says the midfielder continues to appear vulnerable. “Every new physical setback now raises concern to the point of questioning his long-term continuity,” the report said.
“It represents a real dilemma for his manager. The coaching staff must constantly adjust how they handle the Spain midfielder, balancing the need to protect Rodri with the need to rely on him in decisive matches, as happened against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, for example.”
The report added that these circumstances make it difficult for Rodri to find the rhythm needed to regain his best form. Barcelona hope the latest problem will not result in a lengthy absence, but the issue now goes beyond his possible omission against Atletico Madrid.
Having arrived as one of the club’s leading stars, Rodri must prove that he can regain the fitness needed to meet the considerable expectations placed on him. At Barcelona, time is increasingly short.
