Aston Villa’s European firepower presents Barcelona with a major test

Aston Villa arrive at Camp Nou with far more than hopes of making a respectable impression. Unai Emery’s side bring one of the strongest attacks in Europe this season and two of the leading scorers in the Champions League, placing Barcelona’s defence under severe pressure.

Villa have never won at Barcelona’s home ground, but they go into the meeting as the second-highest scorers in this season’s competition. They have found the net 12 times, level with Liverpool and behind only leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who have scored 13. Barcelona are fourth with 11 goals.

Emery’s attacking plans have been driven by Ross Barkley and Nicolas Jackson. Barkley, 32, and Jackson, 25, have both scored three goals in the competition, putting them firmly in contention for the Champions League golden boot.

Villa’s results underline their attacking threat. They opened with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Club Brugge, followed it with a 6-0 win against Fenerbahce and then beat Viking Stavanger 3-1 in their most recent match.

Barcelona also began strongly, defeating Feyenoord 5-1 and Galatasaray 4-1, but their momentum was checked by a 4-2 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.

According to figures published by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have dominated possession, averaging 61.7%, compared with Aston Villa’s 49.3%. Barcelona also lead the tournament for passing accuracy at 92%, while Villa’s figure is 88%, ranking them 17th in that category.

However, Villa’s greater efficiency in front of goal is central to the contest. Jackson has scored three times and is also second in the Champions League standings for shots on target, with eight. He is level with Harry Kane and one behind leader Kylian Mbappe, who has nine.

Barkley and Villa captain John McGinn, 32, are also pursuing a significant club record. Each has scored four goals in European competition for Aston Villa, leaving them four short of matching Gary Shaw’s record of eight Champions League goals for the club, achieved between 1981 and 1983.

Barcelona’s goals have been shared between Lamine Yamal, Karim Adeyemi and Raphinha, who have scored two apiece. Raphinha has 20 Champions League goals for the club and needs five more to become Barcelona’s second-highest scorer in the competition. Luis Suarez and Rivaldo are joint second on 25, behind Robert Lewandowski on 23 according to the figures cited.

Aston Villa begin the match second in the overall standings with nine points and are aiming to remain among the top eight. Barcelona, meanwhile, need victory to avoid becoming embroiled in a complicated qualification battle after their defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.
