Spanish police open investigation into Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel’s fatal on-field collision

Spain’s National Police homicide unit is investigating the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest during his side’s match against FC Andorra in the Spanish Segunda Division.

The 30-year-old died at 08:00 on Tuesday after his condition deteriorated following the collision, which happened in the closing stages of the game.

Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the force of the impact between de Miguel and FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Ouno and the events that followed before the player was taken to hospital.

De Miguel had been trying to lead a counter-attack when Ouno left his goal to stop the move. The two players collided heavily, and the Tenerife forward fell to the ground. Medical staff immediately came on to provide emergency treatment.

De Miguel received cardiopulmonary resuscitation after suffering the cardiorespiratory arrest. He was then taken by ambulance to the Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria University Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Tenerife initially said the player was in a stable condition, despite the seriousness of his injuries. His health worsened over the hours that followed, however, and the club confirmed his death at 08:00 on Tuesday after a deterioration in his neurological condition.

His death prompted widespread mourning across Spanish football. Clubs, players and officials sent their condolences to de Miguel’s family and Tenerife, while the Royal Spanish Football Federation suspended several Copa del Rey matches as a mark of respect.

The National Police investigation is intended to establish the causes and circumstances of the incident. Its opening does not, in itself, mean that Ouno has been charged or that he is considered responsible for de Miguel’s death. The evidence gathered and the conclusions reached by investigators will determine what happened.

The fixtures listed in connection with the clubs include CD Badajoz against Tenerife in the Copa del Rey on 04 November 2026. Tenerife are also listed to play FC Andorra in the Spanish Segunda Division on 08 November 2026, with Mallorca named as the opposing team in the same schedule listing.
