Mamelodi Sundowns begin their push for a clean sweep of South Africa’s domestic honours when they face Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals at Loftus tonight.
The Betway Premiership leaders have turned their attention fully to local competition after suffering a shock preliminary-round elimination from the CAF Champions League at the hands of Angolan club Wiliete SC.
That early continental exit has increased expectations around Miguel Cardoso’s side, who are now expected to dominate the domestic campaign. Sundowns strengthened their case with a convincing 4-1 victory over Durban City at the weekend.
Golden Arrows, however, are unlikely to make the task straightforward. The Durban club are 10th in the Betway Premiership but have been revitalised by the return of coach Mandla Ncikazi, and their reputation for upsetting Mamelodi Sundowns means the hosts cannot afford to underestimate them.
Cardoso has also confirmed that Sundowns will be without several important players. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena are among those currently sidelined by injury.
The Brazilians’ elimination from Africa has been viewed negatively in some quarters, but former player Dan Semake believes it could ultimately benefit their domestic campaign.
“Some people might take our elimination from CAF very negatively, but to me it is a blessing in disguise as it will allow our club to focus on the local silverware,” Semake told KickOff.
He expects Golden Arrows to provide a serious test despite Sundowns’ strong recent performance and their position at the top of the league.
“Our last game shows that Sundowns are now more focused on domestic silverware. We gonna witness an interesting game tonight against Arrows. I’m happy to see Cardoso rotating his players. It is not going to be an easy game for Sundowns,” he said.
Cardoso’s willingness to rotate his squad could prove significant as Sundowns attempt to balance their ambitions across domestic competitions. Yet the pressure to win has intensified since their continental campaign ended earlier than expected.
Semake said the club must focus on progressing one match at a time rather than allowing the prospect of a clean sweep to become a distraction.
“Sundowns are under pressure to do a clean sweep locally this season following their elimination from the CAF Champions League. They must just take every game as it comes.”
A place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals is at stake, with Golden Arrows aiming to exploit any uncertainty in a Sundowns side adjusting to injuries, squad rotation and the demands of becoming dominant at home.
