Chippa United confirm Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium return for Kaizer Chiefs clash

Chippa United have confirmed that their upcoming Betway Premiership match against Kaizer Chiefs will be played at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The Chilli Boys announced the venue in a statement on Tuesday, bringing the 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium back into use after more than six months on the sidelines.

Chippa will host Fernando da Cruz’s Kaizer Chiefs side in Gqeberha on Saturday, 28 November, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30.

The fixture will mark the reopening of Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium following extensive renovations. The work included critical maintenance and rehabilitation of the playing surface after the venue failed to meet the requirements set by the PSL inspection committee earlier in the campaign.

The stadium’s unavailability had forced Chippa to move several high-profile home fixtures to smaller alternative venues, including Buffalo City Stadium and Kings Park Stadium.

The return to Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium gives Brandon Truter’s side an opportunity to stage a major league fixture at their usual home venue as they welcome Chiefs’ players in Gold and Black.

Both teams have experienced mixed league form after nine matches.

Kaizer Chiefs are fifth in the standings with 14 points. They have won three games, drawn five and lost one.

Chippa United are seventh on 11 points, having recorded two victories, five draws and two defeats.

The sides therefore remain close in the table heading into their meeting, with Chiefs holding a three-point advantage over Chippa.
