Kaizer Chiefs defeat could give Fernando Da Cruz time to build

Kaizer Chiefs’ loss to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby may have increased the pressure on Fernando Da Cruz, but the performance at FNB Stadium could also give the coach more time to develop his team.

Expectations had favoured Pirates before Saturday’s Betway Premiership meeting. The Buccaneers were in impressive form, while Chiefs had struggled in recent weeks, leading many to believe Amakhosi would focus on containing their rivals and limiting the damage.

Instead, Chiefs began aggressively. They pressed Pirates high up the pitch, moved forward with intent and created the clearer chances in the opening stages.

Wandile Duba went close early on, while Pule Mmodi also caused problems as Chiefs threatened to take control. By half-time, they could reasonably have been two or three goals in front, but their failure to convert those opportunities ultimately proved costly.

Pirates opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Yanela Mbuthuma found the net. Chiefs responded six minutes later after Mmodi took advantage of an error by Sipho Chaine to bring the match level.

The winning goal came in the 55th minute. Tshepang Moremi completed a counter-attack that began with Thapelo Mokobodi, giving Pirates the decisive advantage.

For Chiefs, it was another match in which encouraging passages were undermined by a lack of precision when it mattered most.

Da Cruz will be frustrated by the result, particularly because his side had chances to put the game beyond Pirates. Yet the display offered more than the final outcome might suggest.

The Portuguese coach has faced sustained questions about his tactical approach, the identity of his team and his ability to get the best from a talented squad. Against Pirates, however, Chiefs showed clearer signs of the attacking style he appears to want.

They committed players forward, competed bravely and tried to impose themselves on the game rather than relying on mistakes from their opponents.

That approach naturally left them vulnerable, especially against a Pirates team equipped to exploit space in transition. Moremi’s goal highlighted that risk, as Mokobodi found room through midfield and sent the winger clear after Chiefs’ high defensive line had been exposed.

Da Cruz’s task is now to improve the balance between attacking initiative and defensive security, rather than abandoning those principles after a derby defeat.

The result leaves Chiefs fifth in the Betway Premiership with 14 points from nine matches. Pirates are second on 25 points, one behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who moved to 26 points after beating Durban City.

That standings gap reflects the scale of the work still required at Naturena. But Chiefs’ defeat was not the result of a team without an identity; it came after they failed to make their chances count.

If they can turn that attacking intent into regular results, the performance against Pirates may have given Da Cruz valuable time to put his ideas into practice.
