Egypt keep Emam Ashour in preliminary squad despite injury concerns ahead of Malawi double-header
Al Ahly midfielder Emam Ashour remains in contention for a place in Egypt’s squad for the upcoming November international break despite uncertainty surrounding his physical condition.
The 27-year-old has been included in the preliminary squad for the Pharaohs’ upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Malawi, with head coach Hossam Hassan keeping the door open for his possible return.
Egypt are scheduled to host Malawi in Cairo on Friday, November 13, before travelling for the reverse fixture on Tuesday, November 17, as they look to consolidate their position at the top of the qualifying group.
Ashour’s potential involvement comes amid concerns over his fitness after missing several of Al Ahly’s recent fixtures.
The midfielder was notably absent from the squad for the CAF Confederation Cup encounter against Kitara, the Egyptian Premier League meeting with Modern Sport and the Egyptian League Cup fixture against Al Mokawloon.
His continued absence has fuelled speculation about a possible injury, but the Egyptian national team medical department has not received any official notification from Al Ahly confirming that the player is nursing an injury.
Nevertheless, Ashour’s name remains on the preliminary list for the November camp, suggesting that the technical handlers are still monitoring his situation ahead of the announcement of the final squad.
His availability will be particularly important for Egypt, considering his influence in midfield and ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.
The Pharaohs will be keen to have their strongest possible squad available as they pursue qualification for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
Egypt currently sit top of their qualifying group with four points from their opening two matches. They began their campaign with a draw against Angola before securing victory over South Sudan in the second round.
Hossam Hassan’s side will now target maximum points from the two encounters against Malawi to strengthen their qualification prospects.
