José Mourinho breaks silence on Vinícius and Diomandé competition at Real Madrid

José Mourinho has insisted that Vinícius Júnior remains an important player for Real Madrid but admitted that the Brazilian will not necessarily start every match as competition for places in attack continues to grow.

The Portuguese coach faces an important selection decision following the international break, with summer signing Yan Diomandé making a strong impression with his recent performances.

Vinícius is currently suspended for Real Madrid’s next two matches but could return for the league encounter against Celta Vigo on November 21. However, his return does not guarantee an immediate place in the starting line-up.

Diomandé has taken advantage of the Brazilian’s absence, producing impressive performances in the same position. The Ivorian has particularly caught attention with his contribution to the team’s defensive work, where he is considered to offer more than Vinícius.

His recent displays have raised discussions about whether Real Madrid look more balanced with the summer signing in the starting eleven rather than the Brazilian forward.

Mourinho, however, has dismissed suggestions that the team functions better without Vinícius.

Speaking on Saturday ahead of Real Madrid’s victory against Santander, the manager was asked whether his side looked more balanced without the Brazilian in the starting line-up.

“No!” Mourinho responded, making his position clear before explaining his approach to the team’s overall performance.

“I see a team that works hard to be balanced in all situations ,” the Portuguese manager began.

He went on to stress that his assessment of the team goes beyond individual attacking contributions, insisting that every player must contribute to the collective effort.

“Offensively, defensively, with the ball, without the ball… I always see it. Vini is a great player and we need him. But when I say we need him, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll start every game. I don’t see him as a problem either.”

Mourinho’s comments suggest that Vinícius remains firmly in his plans, despite the growing competition for his position.

The manager appears determined to maintain a balance within the squad rather than guarantee starting places based on reputation.

Diomandé’s performances have certainly strengthened his case for regular involvement, but Vinícius’ importance to the team has not changed.

With the Brazilian expected to become available again against Celta Vigo, Mourinho will have to decide how best to accommodate both attacking talents as Real Madrid prepare for the next phase of their campaign.
