Diomande’s long-range stunner gives Real Madrid fresh selection dilemma

Ivorian winger Diomande strengthened his case for a regular place in the Real Madrid starting XI with a spectacular goal against Racing Santander, taking full advantage of Vinicius Junior’s absence and raising fresh questions about the Brazilian’s position in the team.

Real Madrid dominated the opening half at El Sardinero and went into the interval 3-0 ahead. Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring from a controversial penalty in the 11th minute before Jude Bellingham doubled the lead 11 minutes later.

Bellingham’s goal came after a decisive pass from Arda Guler, as Real Madrid established control of the match before Diomande added a third in the 36th minute.

The Ivorian’s goal was the standout moment of the first half. After Racing Santander’s defence cleared a corner, Diomande met the loose ball outside the penalty area and struck a first-time right-footed shot into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Aguirre.

The finish capped another impressive display from a player who has been given an extended opportunity because Vinicius Junior is serving a four-match suspension. Diomande has responded by starting matches and producing performances that have made him a serious contender for a place in Real Madrid’s strongest side.

He has now scored five goals this season, including four in La Liga. His recent form means he is doing more than simply covering for Vinicius Junior; he is making a case that could be difficult for the coaching staff to overlook.

The question for Real Madrid is whether Vinicius will automatically return to the starting line-up when his suspension ends, or whether Diomande’s form will force a reconsideration of the options on the wing.

Real Madrid’s listed schedule includes a Champions League match against AEK Athens on 04 November 2026, followed by a La Liga fixture against Malaga on 07 November 2026. Racing Santander are also listed among the club’s fixtures.
