The African continent is anxiously awaiting as Nigeria steps onto the stage this afternoon to face Mexico in the final of the Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The Golden Eagles aim for a record fourth world title in this category, while the reigning champions, Mexico, seek their second.
This clash is a reunion of sorts, as Nigeria had previously faced Mexico in the first group match and emerged victorious with a resounding 6-1, marking the only setback for Mexico in the tournament so far.
“This first match must have left its mark on them, that’s for sure,” says Kelechi Iheanacho, the quadruple scorer and tormentor of the Mexican team in their initial encounter. Since then, both teams have progressed through the tournament, with Mexico notably defeating Brazil in the quarter-finals and Argentina in the semi-finals. While Nigeria boasts the best attack with 23 goals (just one shy of the U17 World Cup record), Mexico has showcased a robust defense.
“It’s clear that it’s not the same match as the first. We are expecting a difficult match, so we will have to be ready. It’s a World Cup final. At this stage, you have to be at your best,” reveals Ulises Rivas, the Mexican captain, emphasizing the significance of the occasion. The Mexican team is eager to cap off their impressive tournament with a victory. However, revenge is not on their minds; it’s all about claiming the coveted trophy: “It would be huge for us. Everyone in the team is hoping for this title; it would be a dream come true.”
Prior to the final, Sweden will face Argentina in the match for third place.
