Frank Ilett, the Manchester United supporter known as “The United Strand”, appeared completely bald in a video after his no-haircut challenge reached 103 matches.
Ilett began the video, posted on his Instagram account, by saying: “Enough… I’ve had enough.” He then showed himself with a shaved head and discussed different hairstyles he might choose for the next stage.
The apparent change was later revealed to be part of a promotional campaign for an artificial intelligence platform. Ilett ended the video by confirming that his challenge had not been abandoned.
“The challenge is still going, and I’m committed to it,” he said. “I won’t cut my hair until Manchester United win five matches in a row.”
Ilett also posted a separate video on Facebook following United’s defeat by Chelsea on Saturday, 31 October 2026.
“Another defeat, no surprises,” he said.
Challenge has lasted more than two years
Ilett began the challenge on 5 October 2024, promising not to visit a barber until Manchester United recorded five consecutive victories in competitive matches. He initially believed the target would be reached within a few months.
Instead, the club has failed to achieve the required run during a period in which five managers, either permanent or interim, have taken charge.
Erik ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ruben Amorim, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick have all managed United during the challenge, which had reached 103 matches and 757 days by the time of the Chelsea game.
Ilett’s pledge therefore remains in place despite his bald appearance in the Instagram video.
Manchester United are listed to face Roma in the Champions League on 3 November 2026. Another listed fixture has Sunderland playing Chelsea in the Premier League on 8 November 2026.
