Manchester United slipped to 17th in the Premier League after a 2-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, leaving Michael Carrick’s side just one point above the relegation zone.
The loss, in Saturday’s ninth-round fixture, was United’s fourth of the season. They have won only once and drawn four times, leaving them with seven points.
United produced a much-improved performance in the first half but failed to turn their opportunities into goals. Several chances to take the lead were missed before Chelsea found a way through shortly after the interval.
Morgan Rogers broke through the Manchester United defence with relative ease to score the opening goal. The visitors’ task then became even more difficult when Lisandro Martinez was shown two quick yellow cards and conceded a penalty.
Cole Palmer converted from the spot to make it 2-0 and effectively end United’s hopes of a comeback.
The result extended Manchester United’s longest run without a win for 38 years and increased the pressure surrounding Carrick, who was asked by TNT Sports whether he expected to remain in charge for the club’s next match against Roma in the Champions League on 03 November 2026.
“Yes, we have to move forward,” Carrick said. “We have to take the things we felt worked for us today and draw some belief and confidence from them, as well as taking a lot of the positives, especially from the first half.”
Carrick acknowledged the contrast between the two periods of the match, while insisting United could take encouragement from their opening performance.
“After being in a very good position in the first half, perhaps the two halves could not have been more different in some ways,” he added. “I think the way they approached it and played, the quality of the football and the way we played in the first half, certainly gives us encouragement. We have to build on that.”
United’s difficult start also extends to Europe. Two defeats in their opening three Champions League matches have left them 20th in the 36-team league-phase table.
That position puts Manchester United at risk of missing out on the knockout stages, adding further significance to the visit of Roma on 03 November 2026.
Their immediate domestic situation is equally serious, with the defeat at Stamford Bridge leaving them closer to the relegation places than to the upper reaches of the Premier League.
