Chelsea compound Manchester United misery as Carrick’s side beaten at Old Trafford

Chelsea moved up to fourth in the Premier League after beating Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday, leaving Michael Carrick’s side 16th and deepening the pressure on their manager.

Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea five minutes after half-time, before Cole Palmer doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 64th minute.

Manchester United had the ball in the net in the first half through Matheus Cunha, but the goal was ruled out by VAR in the 34th minute. Chelsea then saw a second goal disallowed in the 71st minute after Estevao had appeared to score.

The match also ended with Manchester United reduced to 10 men. Defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off after an incident involving Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana.

Chelsea’s victory takes them to 16 points from nine matches, while Manchester United remain on seven points in 16th place.

The result comes after Carrick’s position had come under scrutiny in the days before the match. Manchester United’s hierarchy had been considering his future, but renewed their confidence in the manager until the game against Chelsea.

Carrick must now prepare his team for a Champions League fixture against Roma on 03 November 2026. Chelsea are listed to face Sunderland in the Premier League on 08 November 2026.
