Paris St-Germain setback leaves Real Madrid in pole position for Jay Jay Gabriel

Jay Jay Gabriel has rejected Paris St-Germain’s latest offer and reaffirmed his wish to continue his career in Spain, strengthening Real Madrid’s position in the race to sign the young English midfielder.

The player has remained silent about his next destination while waiting for the formal end of his association with Manchester United. He is also awaiting the issue of a Cypriot passport, which would allow him to complete the registration process as a European Union player.

Despite the uncertainty, a series of meetings and developments in recent days has provided a clearer indication of where Gabriel is likely to play next.

Paris St-Germain had made a final attempt to change the midfielder’s mind, with English reports stating that the French club had improved its proposal on both sporting and financial grounds. The club hoped its ambitious project, together with manager Luis Enrique’s willingness to work with young players, would overcome Gabriel’s initial reservations.

However, after several days of contact, Gabriel and his agent confirmed that their original position had not changed. The player appreciated the offer from Paris St-Germain but believes he can continue his development without leaving the Premier League for French football.

Gabriel also reiterated that his preference is to play in La Liga. He considers Spain the best environment in which to display his ability and progress quickly towards becoming one of the leading players in world football.

Barcelona step back

Unless there is a major late change, Paris St-Germain’s withdrawal from the contest leaves the way clear for Gabriel to join Real Madrid in the near future.

It also appears that the anticipated battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona for the English prospect has largely been settled.

Sources at Barcelona confirmed that the club had been in contact with the player’s agent, Ali Brat, to explore the possibility of signing him. However, those sources later stressed that Barcelona had remained some distance from the competition, a position confirmed by the club’s sporting director, Deco.

The camp around Gabriel, who has been staying in Castelldefels in recent days, was less explicit about Barcelona’s position. The player had been waiting for the necessary stages of the process to be completed, including the assessment of the offers made to him and the arrival of the passport that would allow him to be registered as an EU player.

Barcelona’s proposal was not considered capable of matching the offers from Paris St-Germain and, particularly, Real Madrid. Instead, it was based on Gabriel’s initial desire to move to the Catalan club.

Bayern Munich had already left the race at an early stage, while Barcelona chose not to enter a major financial bidding contest. Paris St-Germain then failed to convince the player with its sporting project.

Real Madrid is now the only club prepared to meet a cost of more than 10 million euros for a contract covering the next three seasons, as well as a series of sporting demands.

All indications point to the Santiago Bernabeu as Gabriel’s next destination, although the final official announcement of the transfer is still awaited.
