Evidence Makgopa’s impressive record in the Soweto derby could earn him another opportunity when Orlando Pirates face Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Pirates will be the home side for the latest sold-out meeting between the two clubs, with Makgopa among the players attracting particular attention despite only recently returning from injury.
The 26-year-old has featured in three matches since recovering and has started just once. That appearance came in midweek against Milford, when he played for a little over an hour before being replaced by Boitumelo Radiopane.
However, his previous performances in this fixture mean Makgopa is expected to be involved again, even if his current role remains limited.
Makgopa has scored four times against AmaKhosi since joining the Bucs. No other player currently at Pirates has scored more goals in the Soweto derby.
Those four goals have come across only six appearances, and he has found the net in each of the past three seasons. His most recent derby goal came in February, when Pirates secured a 3-0 victory.
His record has increased his standing in the history of the fixture and strengthened his popularity among the Ghost. It has also taken him closer to the top of the all-time scoring list for the derby.
Since the beginning of the NSL era in 1985, Fani Madida and Jerry Sikhosana have led the scoring charts with six goals apiece. Doctor Khumalo and Thembinkosi Lorch are next on five, alongside Marks Maponyane, who scored for both clubs.
Makgopa is the only active player from either side with four derby goals.
The efficiency of his record is particularly notable. His four goals have been scored in 280 minutes across six Soweto derby appearances, giving him an average of one goal every 70 minutes in the fixture.
His first season at Pirates began without a derby appearance in the opening three matches. He then made his scoring debut in the contest in November 2023.
Makgopa’s latest return comes with the forward still building up his match fitness, but his record against Chiefs gives Pirates another potential threat as they prepare for a major occasion at FNB Stadium.
