Vicky Lopez dedicates historic second Ballon d’Or Kopa Trophy triumph to late Nigerian mother
Barcelona Femeni star honours Joy Felix, who died when she was 11, after retaining Young Talent of the Year award
Vicky Lopez has paid an emotional tribute to her late Nigerian mother, Joy Felix, after winning the Ballon d’Or Young Talent of the Year award for the second consecutive year.
The 20-year-old Barcelona Femeni and Spain international dedicated the prestigious recognition to her mother, who died from a brain tumour when Lopez was just 11 years old.
Despite losing her mother at a young age, Lopez has continued to draw inspiration from her, with the latest individual accolade providing another opportunity to acknowledge the influence she had on her life and football journey.
“Mom, even though you can’t be physically by my side, I feel your presence every day,” Lopez said.
“Everything I’ve accomplished, I owe to you, so thank you for teaching me never to give up.”
Her words offered a deeply personal moment during a ceremony celebrating her achievements, as she remembered the woman she credits with instilling in her the determination that has helped shape her career.
Nigerian roots remain close to her heart
Lopez has consistently maintained a connection to her Nigerian heritage, with her mother’s background remaining an important part of her identity.
The Barcelona midfielder has previously displayed the Nigerian flag on her football boots, a gesture that reflects her pride in her roots despite representing Spain at international level.
Her latest tribute has further highlighted the influence of her Nigerian family background on her journey to becoming one of the most promising young players in women’s football.
Born in Madrid, Lopez has developed through Barcelona’s youth system and established herself as an important member of the club’s senior team.
Her progress has also earned her recognition on the international stage, where she represents Spain.
Remarkable season earns back-to-back recognition
Lopez’s second consecutive Young Talent of the Year award follows an impressive campaign in which she played a significant role in Barcelona’s success.
During the period under review, the 20-year-old registered 17 goals and 12 assists, while earning Player of the Match honours on six occasions.
Her contributions helped Barcelona maintain their dominance in women’s football, with the Spanish giants also receiving the Ballon d’Or Women’s Club of the Year award.
The back-to-back individual recognition underlines Lopez’s growing influence at club level and her emergence as one of the leading young prospects in the women’s game.
However, beyond the goals, assists and individual accolades, her latest achievement carried a more personal significance.
For Lopez, retaining the prestigious award was not simply another milestone in an increasingly successful career but an opportunity to celebrate the memory of her mother.
Although Joy Felix was not physically present to witness her daughter’s rise, Lopez made it clear that her influence continues to accompany her with every achievement.
