Mbeumo and Manchester United suffer Stamford Bridge defeat as Chelsea claim three points
Manchester United suffered another Premier League setback after losing 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer sealing victory for the home side.
The Red Devils were unable to recover after conceding shortly after the interval and finished the match with 10 players following Lisandro Martínez’s dismissal.
Both sides struggled to find a breakthrough during a closely contested first half. Manchester United had a goal ruled out for offside shortly before the interval, preventing them from taking the lead before the break.
However, the balance of the contest changed shortly after the restart when Chelsea found the back of the net in the 50th minute.
Morgan Rogers gave the hosts the advantage with an excellent finish, lifting the ball over the goalkeeper with a well-timed lob after creating an opportunity inside the penalty area.
The goal put Chelsea in control and left Manchester United facing the difficult task of finding a response against a side enjoying a strong spell in the game.
Their afternoon became even more complicated in the 63rd minute when Martínez was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.
The Argentine defender was punished for a reckless challenge, leaving his teammates with 10 men for the remainder of the contest.
Chelsea quickly took advantage of their numerical superiority, increasing the pressure on the visitors as they looked to extend their lead.
Just a minute after Martínez’s dismissal, the home side were awarded a penalty following a VAR review. Cole Palmer stepped forward to take responsibility from the spot and made no mistake, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way despite the latter getting a touch on his effort.
The goal doubled Chelsea’s advantage and put the result beyond Manchester United’s reach.
With a two-goal deficit and a numerical disadvantage, the visitors struggled to mount a meaningful comeback during the closing stages.
Manchester United were unable to find a way back into the contest, suffering another disappointing defeat in their Premier League campaign.
For Chelsea, the result provided another important three points as they continued their impressive run of form and strengthened their position towards the top of the league table.
The victory also underlined the Blues’ ability to take control of the game after the break, while Manchester United were left to reflect on another difficult afternoon.
