Morocco appoint Abderrahim Arjoun as new refereeing director to replace Redouane Jiyed
Morocco’s National Professional Football League (LNFP) has appointed Abderrahim Arjoun as its new National Technical Director of Refereeing, replacing Redouane Jiyed, who has been reassigned to oversee referee training and continuing education.
The decision was announced on Friday, October 30, as Moroccan football authorities move to restructure the leadership of the country’s refereeing department following growing criticism of its management and officiating standards.
According to the league’s statement, Arjoun’s appointment is part of efforts to improve refereeing standards and strengthen the structures responsible for developing match officials across Morocco.
Jiyed, meanwhile, will remain within the refereeing administration, taking responsibility for training and the professional development of referees. The LNFP said the decision recognised his experience at continental and international levels.
Growing criticism surrounding Moroccan refereeing
The leadership changes come after a period of mounting dissatisfaction with the management of refereeing in Moroccan domestic football.
Controversial decisions during league matches and concerns over the administration of the National Refereeing Directorate have increasingly attracted criticism from football stakeholders.
LNFP president Abdessalam Belkchour had previously expressed dissatisfaction with Jiyed’s performance and his handling of the refereeing department.
Moroccan media reports have also pointed to tensions between Jiyed and several referees, with some officials reportedly unhappy with his management style and handling of internal matters.
These concerns contributed to questions about the department’s leadership and its ability to address issues within the refereeing community.
Arjoun returns to a senior refereeing position
Arjoun’s appointment represents a return to a prominent leadership role within Morocco’s refereeing structure, where he will be responsible for overseeing the technical direction of match officials.
He takes over at a time when Moroccan refereeing faces increasing pressure to improve officiating standards and rebuild confidence among clubs, referees and other football stakeholders.
Jiyed’s reassignment will see him concentrate on referee education, training and professional development while remaining involved in the country’s refereeing system.
The new administrative structure will be expected to address existing concerns, improve coordination within the department and strengthen confidence in refereeing across Moroccan domestic competitions.
