The Algerian football landscape is on the brink of a significant transformation following the departure of Coach Djamel Belmadi, the mastermind behind the Fennecs’ success since 2018, including their triumphant victory in the 2019 African Cup of Nations. However, after a string of inconsistent performances and an early exit from the recent African Cup of Nations, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is poised to usher in a new era by turning to a seasoned strategist.
In recent days, the prominent name of Carlos Queiroz has surfaced as a potential candidate, and according to Ennahar channel reports, an agreement may have been reached with the esteemed Portuguese tactician, who boasts an extensive international coaching career.
Queiroz has expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect of leading a “very big team” on the African continent, with media sources even hinting at an “imminent formalization” of his appointment.
This development signals a shift away from the previously speculated candidacy of Vahid Halilhodzic, who had been considered the frontrunner for the coaching position.
While Algeria seeks a revival after a series of mixed results, Carlos Queiroz’s rich experience at the helm of national teams, including Portugal, Iran, and most recently Qatar, along with his role as an assistant at Manchester United, positions him as a candidate with a fresh perspective.
Despite reports from Ennahar suggesting an agreement, caution is advised until the FAF officially formalizes the decision.
Journalist Yacine Benlamnouar exercised prudence, reporting that a financial offer has been extended to the 70-year-old coach, with his response anticipated within the week.
During discussions with Walid Sadi, the FAF president, Queiroz reportedly diagnosed the Fennecs’ challenges as primarily mental, despite acknowledging the team’s wealth of talent.
Additionally, there are indications that Queiroz may be assisted by a local technician. If confirmed, this would mark Queiroz’s third experience coaching an African national team, following stints with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana from 2000 to 2002 and Egypt from 2021 to 2022.
