Barcelona’s Brian Farinas waits for first-team opening as injuries narrow Hansi Flick’s options

Brian Farinas remains the only outfield player in Barcelona’s first-team squad yet to play a single minute this season, despite being available to manager Hansi Flick.

Frenkie de Jong has also not featured, but his absence is the result of an injury suffered during the 2026 World Cup. Farinas, meanwhile, has been left out of Flick’s plans despite being registered in La Liga wearing the number four shirt.

According to Sport, the young midfielder’s position is particularly notable because he came close to leaving Barcelona for Girona last summer. Flick intervened to prevent the move, but Farinas has since found opportunities difficult to secure.

The programme “Barca Reservat” reported that Farinas is dealing with the situation calmly and patiently. He views the season as an opportunity to learn alongside some of the world’s best players, especially his close friend Lamine Yamal.

Farinas is not currently considering a loan move during the winter transfer window, although the next two months are expected to be important in determining whether that position changes.

Flick has maintained regular contact with the youngster, offering instructions and correcting mistakes to help him improve. The German manager has also encouraged Farinas to continue working in the same way and be ready to take his opportunity when it arrives.

Injuries could create an opening

Barcelona’s injury problems have already begun to affect Flick’s squad during the past two matches. Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde and Dani Olmo have joined an absentee list that also includes Roony Bardghji and Andreas Christensen.

The growing number of unavailable players has reduced Flick’s selection options and is likely to force him to rely more heavily on his substitutes. In midfield, Olmo’s fitness problems could create opportunities for players who have not yet established prominent roles.

Fermin Lopez is regarded as an essential option in the attacking midfield position, but he will need rest and rotation before the November international break. Several players could therefore be used to cover for him, including Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Bernal, while Lamine Yamal could be moved into a central role. Raphinha is another possible option as an advanced playmaker.

Gavi is considered the player most likely to benefit from Olmo’s absence. Farinas could also gain from the succession of changes, although he remains at the bottom of the current pecking order. If selected, he could feature either as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced midfield role.

There is still a long way to go in the season and the Copa del Rey has yet to begin, meaning Barcelona believe Farinas will eventually receive his chance.

Sport reported in mid-September that the youngster was also close to extending his current Barcelona contract, which runs until 2028. The remaining details are expected to be settled soon, with Farinas set to receive a salary reflecting his new status in the first team. His release clause, currently €15m, is also expected to increase.
