Paris security review threatens PSG’s plans for Lyon clash and Ballon d’Or ceremony

Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 meeting with Lyon on Sunday could be postponed because of heightened security pressures in the French capital, potentially forcing the club to choose between the rearranged fixture and the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London.

The match is scheduled to take place at the Parc des Princes as part of the eighth round of the French league. However, RMC Sport reports that the Paris police authorities are considering changing the date because of preparations for a weekend in which further demonstrations are expected.

Security resources are already under pressure because the Stade de France is due to host a regular-season National Football League game. The event will require a significant police presence, while authorities are also dealing with the aftermath of violence and looting in Paris on Saturday during protests over the rising cost of living.

Any decision to move the fixture would have implications beyond the Ligue 1 schedule. The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is due to be held in London on Monday, meaning a rearranged match could clash with the event.

A similar situation occurred last year when the French classic between Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain was delayed by 24 hours. The revised fixture conflicted with the Ballon d’Or ceremony and prevented several Paris Saint-Germain players from attending as Ousmane Dembele collected the award.

If the meeting with Lyon is moved to Monday, other Paris Saint-Germain nominees could again face a choice between their club commitments and travelling to London for the ceremony.

Ousmane Dembele, Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes are expected to be included in Paris Saint-Germain’s delegation to London. All three are injured and would be unavailable for the Lyon match regardless of when it is played.

The availability of the other Paris Saint-Germain players who may attend the ceremony will depend on the final date and kick-off time for the match. If the fixture is held at the same time as the event, their sporting commitments could prevent them from making the journey to London.

Other French fixtures have already been affected by the security situation. The Ligue 1 meeting between Toulouse and Troyes has been moved from Saturday to Sunday, while the Ligue 2 match between Montpellier and Red Star has been postponed until Monday.

The Paris Saint-Germain-Lyon fixture is also significant because of the teams’ positions in the table. Lyon lead the competition on 14 points, with Paris Saint-Germain behind them only on goal difference.

Before the potential meeting in Paris, Lyon face German side Hoffenheim on Thursday in the league phase of the Europa League. That European fixture adds further pressure to an already crowded schedule.

The decision on whether the match can go ahead as planned now rests with the French authorities, with security demands, European commitments and the approaching Ballon d’Or ceremony all affecting Paris Saint-Germain’s plans.
