Orlando Pirates await Kamogelo Sebelebele injury update before African Stars tie

Orlando Pirates are facing the prospect of being without Kamogelo Sebelebele for Friday’s CAF Champions League second preliminary round second-leg match against African Stars of Namibia.

The 24-year-old right-back has not played since suffering an injury in the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns earlier this month. Pirates are still waiting for a clearer assessment of the problem, with indications that the defender could be unavailable for an extended period.

The club has not yet confirmed the nature of the injury or how long Sebelebele is expected to remain out. Pirates are expected to issue a medical update in due course, which should clarify whether the versatile player has any chance of returning soon.

Injury sustained in MTN8 final

Sebelebele was injured during the first half of the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on October 10, when Pirates were beaten 2-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns.

The former TS Galaxy player was substituted at half-time, with Oswin Appollis taking his place. Sebelebele was later seen using crutches as he collected his runners-up medal, prompting concern about the seriousness of the setback.

Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou later confirmed that Sebelebele would miss the club’s CAF Champions League fixture against African Stars, although he hoped the injury would not be severe.

The defender subsequently sat out last Saturday’s first leg against the Namibian side. Pirates are now preparing for the return match on Friday as they continue their continental campaign.

The club’s further medical assessment is expected to determine the likely recovery period and provide clarity over Sebelebele’s availability for the second-leg encounter.
