South Africa manager Pitso Mosimane is facing increasing competition for places at centre-back as a growing group of defenders push for selection in the Bafana Bafana squad.
Mosimane began his second spell in charge in September, replacing Belgian coach Hugo Broos before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea.
The experienced manager made a strong return, leading South Africa to victories over Guinea, Eritrea and Egypt. Several defenders impressed during that international period, giving Mosimane a wide range of options to assess.
Competition at centre-back
The players selected for those matches included Khulumani Ndamane, Lebone Seema, Olwethu Makhanya, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Ime Okon.
Competition could become even more intense when Mbekezeli Mbokazi returns from injury. He missed the September international break but is expected to re-enter the discussion once available.
Aden McCarthy has also strengthened his case while playing in Europe. The former Kaizer Chiefs defender has been producing impressive performances for Azerbaijani club Sabah FK and recently scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Borussia Dortmund.
Kaizer Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley is another player who could come into contention. The highly rated left-footed centre-back is recovering from injury and may be considered once he is fully fit.
Experienced players still in contention
Mosimane can also call on the experience of Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala, who remain potential options for the national side and add further depth to the position.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Rushine De Reuck has meanwhile made a strong impression in Tanzania with Simba SC. He is playing under coach Steve Barker after joining the club from his previous career in South Africa.
Barker, the former Stellenbosch FC coach, believes the 30-year-old has done enough to merit another opportunity with Bafana Bafana. De Reuck has established himself as an important player for the Tanzanian club during his current spell.
With several other defenders also drawing attention through their performances, Mosimane will have a significant number of decisions to make before naming his next South Africa squad.
