Burkina Faso’s President Blaise Compaoré was awarded a certificate of excellence by the International Cycling Union (UCI) for his efforts in promoting cycling in the country. The UCI President, Pat McQuaid, presented the award during the African cycling championships held in Ouagadougou. This is the first time the UCI has awarded such a diploma to a head of state. McQuaid and the president of the African Cycling Confederation (CAC) commended President Compaoré’s commitment to the sport and encouraged him to be a spokesperson for cycling among other African leaders. The UCI and CAC leaders believe that Africa has talented cyclists who can compete internationally in the future.
President Compaoré expressed his gratitude and noted that the recognition also honors millions of Burkinabè who use bicycles for daily activities. He pledged continued support for cycling in Burkina Faso, and the president of CAC presented him with the medal of the 2012 African road cycling championship held in Ouagadougou.
