Emmanuel Adebayor, the Togolese international, broke his silence since the end of the transfer window and his decision to stay at Tottenham despite facing competition from Andre Villas-Boas. In a long interview with The Sun newspaper, Adebayor reflected on his challenging period with Spurs but expressed determination.
“I tried to stay confident, but I can’t sink any lower. If I go lower, then that means I’m dead. What I found difficult was not training with the young people, but seeing the physio arrive to tell me that I was going to train with the young people. I found it hard,” confided Adebayor. This treatment did not sit well with the player’s fans.
Despite rumors of a potential departure in January, Adebayor affirmed, “I still have three years of a contract here, I’m not going anywhere. I’m fully committed, my fitness level is coming back, and I still have things to do here.” His words sparked discussions among Tottenham supporters, with some appreciating his commitment.
While Adebayor has been sidelined, his designated replacement, Roberto Soldado, has faced challenges in convincing the supporters. Soldado has scored four goals, but three came from penalty kicks, earning him some nicknames on the web (Penaldado). However, some fans believe Adebayor would bring more to the team.
Adebayor joined Tottenham in 2012 from Manchester City for €6 million. Despite a disappointing first season with only five league goals, he was the club’s top scorer the previous season while on loan, scoring 18 goals in 37 matches in all competitions.
