Aden McCarthy nets Champions League goal against Dortmund

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy delivered an impressive individual performance for Sabah in their UEFA Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund.

McCarthy earned an 8.0 match rating after scoring a goal and making a crucial goal-line clearance during the encounter.

The South African defender completed the full 90 minutes and was reportedly the highest-rated defender on the pitch, underlining his contribution at both ends of the field.

McCarthy was solid defensively, winning four of his five duels, including his only aerial duel, while completing both of his attempted tackles. He was not dribbled past by any opponent.

The centre-back also demonstrated composure in possession, completing 32 of his 36 passes for an accuracy rate of 89 per cent. He registered 46 touches and created one key pass, further highlighting his contribution to Sabah’s performance.

His goal added another dimension to an outing that showcased his ability to influence proceedings beyond his primary defensive responsibilities.

McCarthy joined Sabah from Kaizer Chiefs in June 2026 after establishing himself in South Africa, with the move offering him an opportunity to test his abilities in European football.

His performance against Dortmund represents a significant moment in his career, as he continues to gain experience against high-level opposition on the continental stage.

While it remains to be seen whether the display will attract interest from other clubs, the reported statistics underline an encouraging showing from the former Amakhosi defender.
