Jean-Philippe Mateta keen on January Manchester United move as Crystal Palace consider sale
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is reportedly keen to join Manchester United in January, with the Premier League side considering a move to strengthen their attacking options.
According to talkSPORT, the 29-year-old French forward would welcome a switch to Old Trafford, while Palace could consider selling him during the winter transfer window because he has shown little inclination to extend his contract, which expires next summer.
Manchester United have previously considered signing Mateta and could view him as a viable option as they seek additional firepower in attack. The club’s lack of depth up front has become a concern, particularly with Benjamin Sesko sidelined by injury.
Manager Michael Carrick has had to manage his attacking options without a recognised centre-forward in recent matches, prompting renewed discussion about the need for reinforcements.
There is reportedly an acknowledgement within United’s hierarchy that the club should have done more to address its attacking depth during the summer transfer window. Mateta could therefore emerge as a target when the market reopens in January.
However, the striker’s fitness remains a consideration. Mateta has played just 92 minutes in the Premier League this season because of a hamstring injury, limiting his opportunities to contribute to Palace’s campaign.
His contract situation could nevertheless work in United’s favour. With his current deal approaching its expiry, Palace may prefer to negotiate a transfer in January rather than risk losing him without a fee next summer.
Mateta has established himself as a proven Premier League goalscorer during his time at Selhurst Park, making him a potentially attractive option for United if they decide to pursue another striker.
For now, no agreement has been confirmed, but the reported interest and Mateta’s willingness to consider a move could make him one to watch when the January transfer window opens.
