Sudan FA move to tie Kwesi Appiah down until 2029 after historic revival

The Sudan Football Association (SFA) is in advanced discussions to extend James Kwesi Appiah’s contract until 2029 as it seeks to maintain the stability and progress achieved under the Ghanaian coach.

Appiah’s current deal runs until June 2028, but the governing body is keen to secure his services for another year following his impressive work with the Falcons of Jediane.

The proposed extension reflects Sudan’s desire to build on the team’s recent achievements and maintain continuity ahead of future Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and World Cup qualifying campaigns.

Since taking charge in September 2023, Appiah has guided Sudan through a challenging period, transforming the national team into a competitive force despite the difficulties caused by the country’s ongoing civil conflict.

Appiah transforms Sudan despite civil war challenges

Appiah inherited an extraordinary challenge when he was appointed, with the domestic football league suspended because of the conflict in Sudan.

The former Ghana coach was forced to assemble and prepare his squad outside the country, while Sudan played their designated home matches at neutral venues, including Libya and South Sudan.

Despite those obstacles, Appiah guided the Falcons of Jediane to qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, earning recognition for his work and a nomination for the 2024 CAF Men’s Coach of the Year award.

His most notable achievement during the qualifying campaign came against Ghana, his home country.

Sudan secured a goalless draw away from home before recording a memorable 2-0 victory on neutral ground to eliminate the Black Stars and book their place at the continental showpiece.

The team continued to make progress at the tournament itself, reaching the knockout stage for the first time in several editions after successfully negotiating the group phase.

That performance further strengthened Appiah’s position as Sudan’s head coach and increased confidence in the long-term direction of the national team.

AFCON 2027 campaign offers fresh encouragement

Sudan have carried their competitive form into the qualifying campaign for the 2027 AFCON.

The Falcons of Jediane began their campaign with a crucial 1-0 victory over Ethiopia, providing an encouraging start as they seek another appearance at the continental tournament.

The result has reinforced the importance of maintaining continuity within the technical team as Sudan pursue qualification for the next edition.

The SFA’s reported willingness to extend Appiah’s contract until 2029 would allow the Ghanaian to continue developing the squad and prepare for subsequent international assignments without immediate uncertainty over his future.

The proposed agreement would also give Sudan an opportunity to build on the tactical structure and organisation established during his tenure.

World Cup heartbreak fails to derail long-term plans

Appiah’s spell has not been without disappointment, particularly during Sudan’s campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Sudan emerged as one of the early surprises in Group B, collecting 10 points from their opening four matches to move to the top of the standings.

Their strong start briefly placed them ahead of established continental sides, including Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising hopes of a historic first appearance at the World Cup.

However, defeats to Senegal and DR Congo during the latter stages of the campaign disrupted their momentum.

Sudan eventually finished third with 13 points, missing out on qualification despite their promising start.

The setback notwithstanding, the SFA appears determined to retain Appiah and continue with its existing technical project rather than make a change in leadership.

Sudan FA seek stability under Ghanaian coach

The proposed extension underlines the association’s commitment to Appiah’s leadership as it looks beyond the disappointment of the World Cup qualifying campaign.

Having guided Sudan through difficult circumstances to AFCON qualification and the tournament’s knockout stage, the coach has established a foundation the governing body is keen to preserve.

Negotiations are reportedly progressing towards an agreement, although an official signing has yet to be confirmed.

If the deal is completed, Appiah would remain in charge until 2029, giving him an extended opportunity to strengthen Sudan’s national team and pursue further success on the African stage.
