CAF CL: MC Alger face huge test after Enugu Rangers defeat and Oussama Benhaoua’s red card
MC Alger must produce a major comeback in Algeria after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Enugu Rangers in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary-round tie.
The Algerian champions were left with a difficult task after losing in Abeokuta on Sunday, 18 October 2026, with Oussama Benhaoua’s second-half red card adding to their problems against the Nigerian side.
Rangers took a two-goal advantage into the return leg, scheduled for 23 October, leaving MC Alger with little room for error as they attempt to keep their hopes of reaching the 2026-27 group stage alive.
The defeat represents a setback for Ben Yahia’s side, who had entered the contest after eliminating ASN Nigelec with a 5-0 aggregate victory.
They must now respond against a Rangers team that managed to secure a clean sheet on home soil.
Benhaoua dismissal compounds MC Alger’s problems
MC Alger’s challenge became more difficult when Benhaoua was shown a straight red card in the 53rd minute.
The dismissal forced the Algerian side to continue with 10 players for the remainder of the match, limiting their options as they attempted to respond to Rangers’ performance.
The setback came after MC Alger had already been forced to adjust their defensive line-up because captain Ayoub Abdellaoui was unavailable through injury.
Abdelkader Menezla started in defence, while Ayoub Ghezala wore the captain’s armband.
The loss of Benhaoua added another complication for Ben Yahia, whose side must now prepare for the return fixture while assessing their available options.
Rangers punish Algerian champions
Enugu Rangers took full advantage of the opportunity to establish a two-goal lead before travelling to Algeria.
The Nigerian side also achieved the defensive objective outlined by captain Chidiebere Nwobodo before kick-off.
“The first thing is that we mustn’t concede here.”
Rangers kept MC Alger scoreless and secured a result that puts them in a favourable position ahead of the second leg.
The victory followed a more difficult qualifying round for the Nigerian team, who needed a penalty shootout to eliminate AS Sobemap of Benin after two 1-1 draws.
MC Alger, by contrast, had progressed comfortably past ASN Nigelec, winning their tie 5-0 on aggregate.
Their defeat in Nigeria has therefore changed the outlook of their qualification campaign.
What MC Alger need in the second leg
MC Alger will have to overturn the two-goal deficit when the teams meet again in Algeria on 23 October.
A three-goal victory would put them through on aggregate, while a two-goal win would level the tie and require a decision under the competition’s applicable rules.
The Algerian side will need a more effective attacking performance and greater defensive discipline if they are to reverse the result.
Rangers, meanwhile, can approach the return fixture knowing that a draw or a narrow defeat may be enough to preserve their aggregate advantage, depending on the final score.
However, the Nigerian side cannot afford to underestimate the challenge of playing away from home against opponents who have the opportunity to respond in front of their own supporters.
A painful historical reminder
Rangers also have reason to approach the return leg with caution. In the 1976 semi-final between the clubs, the Nigerian side won 2-0 at home before losing 3-0 in Algeria.
That previous encounter demonstrates how a strong first-leg performance does not guarantee progression when the tie moves to the opposing team’s ground.
For MC Alger, the immediate priority is to recover from the defeat and prepare for a match that could determine their continental future.
For Rangers, the task is to protect their advantage and avoid a repeat of the historical outcome.
The second leg will decide which side advances to the group stage, with MC Alger facing the greater pressure after their defeat in Nigeria.
