Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has had successful surgery to treat a fractured jaw after being injured during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
The Argentina international was hurt when his head collided with that of Everton defender Jarrod Branthwaite as the pair attempted to deal with a cross.
Martinez received treatment on the pitch for more than eight minutes before being carried on a stretcher to an ambulance waiting outside the ground.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said after the match that the goalkeeper had been taken to hospital for precautionary medical checks. The club later confirmed that Martinez had undergone an operation.
“Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez underwent successful surgery to treat a fractured jaw,” Chelsea said in a statement. “Everyone at Chelsea wishes Emi a speedy recovery and the club will support him throughout his rehabilitation.”
Martinez helped Chelsea secure the victory at Everton’s ground, with the clean sheet their first in the Premier League for nine months.
Chelsea scored twice without reply in the match, played in the seventh round of the Premier League, to move up to fourth place with 13 points.
They are eight points behind Manchester City, who are the sole leaders of the table.
Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture is against Tottenham on Saturday, 24 October.
