Jose Mourinho tells Vinicius to work harder after Roma struggles

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has urged Vinicius Junior to work harder after the Brazilian winger struggled in the Champions League victory over Roma, while defending him against criticism following his difficult performance.

Vinicius endured a challenging evening as Roma repeatedly targeted his flank, making life difficult for the 26-year-old. Mourinho attributed much of the winger’s struggles to Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s tactical approach, which forced Real Madrid to adjust during the match.

“He had a very difficult match. In my view, the main reason for his struggles was Gasperini, they consistently attacked down his flank,” Mourinho said.

The Portuguese coach also expressed frustration with Roma’s second goal, which came when he felt the contest was evenly balanced. He acknowledged that managing substitutions had been difficult as the Italian side changed its approach after the break.

Despite defending Vinicius, Mourinho made it clear that the forward must improve his work rate.

“Vinicius needs to work harder. I won’t make any promises but I expect him to start on Wednesday,” he added, indicating that the Brazilian could return to the starting lineup for the Champions League meeting with RB Leipzig.

Mourinho also praised Vinicius’ personality and resilience, revealing that the pair speak privately every day. He described the forward as someone who continues to face challenges with a smile and remains committed to Real Madrid despite outside criticism.

“If I were in his shoes, I probably wouldn’t still be here. I would have pushed for a move to a country where I’d be respected,” Mourinho said.

The coach believes Vinicius has remained at Madrid because of his loyalty and affection for the club, adding that the winger still believes the situation can improve.

Mourinho’s comments underline his support for Vinicius while making clear that the Brazilian must continue working to regain his best form.
