Real Madrid call for Javier Tebas to resign after Goebbels comparison

Real Madrid have demanded the resignation of La Liga president Javier Tebas after he compared the club’s communications strategy with the propaganda methods used by Nazi official Joseph Goebbels.

Tebas made the comments in a social media post in which he accused Real Madrid of leading a coordinated campaign against La Liga and its match officials.

Real Madrid’s official television channel regularly broadcasts compilations of refereeing errors involving officials appointed to take charge of the club’s forthcoming matches.

“The executive of Real Madrid has an orchestra of mouthpieces and Real Madrid leads the way,” Tebas wrote.

“Its script is always the same: select plays that favor it, repeat the alleged affront, increase suspicion and name enemies.

“It reminds one of the propaganda techniques that Goebbels used. The comparison is with the techniques, not with the ideology or, of course, with Madrid fans.”

Real Madrid responded with an official statement accusing Tebas of demonstrating that he was no longer fit to remain in his position.

“Javier Tebas’s repeated conduct demonstrates a lack of neutrality, respect, and impartiality incompatible with his institutional responsibilities,” the club said.

“His constant attacks on Real Madrid and those demanding transparency and regeneration represent, in our club’s view, a genuine scourge for Spanish football.”

The club said Tebas’s repeated public criticism had undermined the neutrality expected from the head of Spain’s top flight.

Real Madrid also argued that his departure was required to protect the integrity of Spanish football and rebuild confidence in the leadership of the league.

The dispute represents a further escalation in the long-running conflict between Real Madrid and LaLiga’s hierarchy.

Tebas maintained that his reference to Goebbels concerned communication techniques alone, rather than his ideology or Real Madrid supporters.

Real Madrid, however, said the comparison crossed the limits of acceptable language for the most senior official in Spain’s top-flight competition.

The club’s demand comes amid continuing disagreement over transparency, refereeing and the way criticism of La Liga is conducted. Real Madrid’s statement specifically linked Tebas’s attacks to its calls for “transparency and regeneration”, saying his conduct was incompatible with the responsibilities of his office.

The exchange has placed the relationship between the league president and one of Spain’s most prominent clubs under renewed pressure. Real Madrid’s position is that Tebas’s lack of neutrality, respect and impartiality means he should no longer lead La Liga.
