Zamalek board member Ahmed Suleiman has detailed the club’s previous attempt to sign Modern Sport forward Mahmoud Mamdouh.
Mamdouh currently leads the Egyptian Premier League goalscoring charts with six goals after the opening five rounds of the season.
Speaking to MBC Masr 2, Suleiman said Zamalek had identified Mamdouh as one of several promising players while he was overseeing the club’s football operations.
“When I was in charge of football at Zamalek, we tried to sign a number of promising players, including Mahmoud Mamdouh, who now plays for Modern Sport,” Suleiman said.
“The player signed documents with me while I was in hospital. I do not know what happened afterwards after I sent the papers to the board, and he then joined Modern Sport.”
Suleiman said Mamdouh was first brought to his attention when he was playing in the second division for Haras El Hodoud.
“How did I think about signing him? He was recommended to me while he was a second-division player with Haras El Hodoud,” he added.
Mamdouh moved from Haras El Hodoud to Modern Sport and is currently in his second season with the club.
The 24-year-old has made 68 Egyptian Premier League appearances for Haras El Hodoud and Modern Sport, scoring 14 goals. He can play as either a striker or a left winger.
Mamdouh had previously spoken about Zamalek’s interest in 2024, when he was playing for Haras El Hodoud in the professional league.
“Zamalek tried to sign me last January, but there are no official negotiations at the moment,” he said at the time.
“I leave these matters to my agent and I am focusing only on my team.”
