Ghana have appointed Kim Lars Björkegren to lead an interim Black Stars technical team for their November fixture against Somalia, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram named as assistant coaches.

The appointments follow a recommendation from the Black Stars Coach Search Committee, which has been working to identify the right leadership for the national team during a period of transition.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, approved the recommendation after reviewing the situation and consulting several coaching candidates.

Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has also been appointed as goalkeepers’ coach, completing the main coaching appointments announced for the upcoming international assignment.

The interim team is expected to oversee preparations for the November fixture while the search committee continues its work to identify a permanent head coach.

Björkegren to lead interim Black Stars team

Björkegren will take charge of the technical team, supported by Tanko and Attram as assistant coaches, while Dauda will focus on the development and preparation of the goalkeepers.

According to the joint statement, the appointments bring together international experience, local knowledge and technical expertise, alongside an understanding of Ghanaian football.

The institutions involved said the decision was intended to provide continuity, experienced leadership and strategic direction as the Black Stars move through a period of renewal.

The combination of coaches is expected to provide the support needed to prepare the national team for its November international assignment.

The announcement comes as the authorities seek to maintain stability around the Black Stars while the process of appointing a permanent head coach remains ongoing.

Permanent Head Coach Search Continues

The interim arrangement is specifically intended to cover the November fixtures and does not signal the end of the search for a substantive head coach.

The Black Stars Coach Search Committee will continue its work towards making a permanent appointment, with the latest decision providing a temporary structure for the team’s immediate preparations.

The GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have been involved in the process, with the committee reviewing candidates before recommending the interim coaching team.

Further appointments are also expected, as additional technical and support staff will be brought in to ensure the squad has the necessary resources during the November international window.

The authorities have not announced the full list of those additional staff members, but said the appointments would help ensure the team is adequately equipped for its upcoming assignment.

Authorities Call for Support for Black Stars

The GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Black Stars Coach Search Committee have reaffirmed their commitment to providing the country’s national teams with the technical and operational support needed to pursue their objectives.

Their statement also included the Black Queens, Ghana’s women’s national team, with the three institutions pledging support for both teams during the upcoming international period.

The institutions have urged Ghanaians to rally behind the Black Stars as the players and interim technical team prepare for their next assignment.

The November fixture against Somalia will provide the immediate focus for the newly appointed staff as Ghana continue to work towards establishing long-term leadership for the senior men’s national team.

The joint announcement was issued by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the Ghana Football Association and the Black Stars Head Coach Search Committee.
