Soufiane Bahassa proud to continue with Bordeaux in R1
Soufiane Bahassa has expressed his pride at continuing with Girondins de Bordeaux as the historic French club prepares to begin its Régional 1 campaign following a difficult period in its history.
The 32-year-old midfielder is among six players from last season who have committed to staying with Bordeaux for the 2026/27 campaign, despite the club’s dramatic fall from the professional divisions to regional football.
Bahassa announced his decision on social media, reaffirming his attachment to the club and its supporters.
“It is with immense pride that I announce that the adventure continues with the Girondins. I am happy and proud to continue wearing the scapulaire [the V-shaped crest] and defending the navy-and-white colors. The story continues,” he wrote.
The midfielder has been with Bordeaux for two seasons and could play an important role as the club attempts to rebuild and work its way back up the French football pyramid. Since arriving during the club’s first season in National 2, he has contributed five goals and 13 assists.
Bordeaux’s decline followed their sporting relegation from Ligue 1 in 2022 and subsequent administrative difficulties, which eventually forced them into amateur football. The club will now begin a new chapter in Régional 1 under coach Arnaud Cormier.
The Girondins are scheduled to open their league campaign against the reserve team of Aviron Bayonnais on Friday, October 16. However, Bahassa is reportedly still recovering from a calf injury and is not expected to be available for the match.
His decision to remain nevertheless represents a show of loyalty as Bordeaux look to rebuild their identity and return to the higher levels of French football.
