Mainz hand Rael Nakuzola first professional contract

Rael Nakuzola has signed his first professional contract with Mainz 05 after making an encouraging start to life with the Bundesliga club.

The 19-year-old left-back joined Mainz’s reserve team from Rot-Weiss Essen during the summer but quickly caught the attention of the senior coaching staff with his performances in pre-season. His progress earned him two brief appearances in the Bundesliga, totalling 18 minutes against Hamburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Mainz have now rewarded his development with his first professional deal, reflecting the club’s confidence in his potential.

“Rael has taken his opportunity with a lot of commitment and courage. We are convinced that, with his attitude and footballing ability, he is ready to earn further Bundesliga appearances,” sporting director Niko Bungert said.

Nakuzola also expressed his excitement at signing his first professional contract, describing the rapid progress as a source of pride. He said his immediate ambition was to continue improving and earn as many minutes on the pitch as possible.

The left-back will face competition from established options Phillipp Mwene and Anthony Caci, both of whom remain important to Mainz. Fischer praised their recent performances but suggested Nakuzola would eventually receive further opportunities if he continued developing.
