Al-Khaleej technical director Jose Gomes has dismissed reports linking him with a return to Egyptian giants Zamalek, insisting his focus remains on his current club in Saudi Arabia.
The Portuguese coach’s name emerged as a potential candidate to return to the Cairo-based side following their 2-0 defeat by rivals Al Ahly in the Egyptian Premier League on Sunday.
However, Gomes played down the speculation after Al-Khaleej secured a 2-0 victory over Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro League on Thursday, claiming their first league win of the season.
Asked about reports of negotiations with Zamalek, Gomes told Saudi media: “Negotiations to return to Zamalek? If you follow the rumours and social media, and decide to focus on them, you will go crazy.”
He questioned how stories could change as they circulated, adding: “It’s like a story that’s passed around between four people, and then it changes completely, so what about 120 million Egyptians?”
Gomes insisted the reports were unfounded and reaffirmed his commitment to Al-Khaleej.
“The rumours are untrue and the story is completely different. My focus is entirely on Al-Khaleej Club, and I am very happy here,” he said.
The 54-year-old added that he was enjoying his time at the Saudi club, where he was working with the players to build a competitive team.
“Everyone treats me wonderfully. I am working to help the players build a new and strong team, and we are working together with high professionalism,” he said.
Gomes previously managed Zamalek between February and December 2024, leading the Egyptian club to victory in the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Super Cup.
His achievements during that spell earned him recognition among the club’s supporters, making reports of a possible return a subject of interest following Zamalek’s defeat by Al Ahly.
Despite the speculation, Gomes has made it clear that he is not considering a return to Zamalek at this stage and remains committed to his role at Al-Khaleej.
