Antony Matheus has described the distress of having his home burgled after Real Betis’ 3-2 victory over Porto in the second round of the league phase of the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Real Betis forward shared his experience in a post on Instagram, saying a night that should have been a positive occasion had instead become “an experience filled with anger and frustration”.
“I am sharing details today of a sad and upsetting situation,” he wrote. “A night that was supposed to be wonderful turned into an experience full of anger and frustration. My home was burgled.”
Antony said the emotional impact of the incident had been greater than the financial loss, particularly because it had affected his family’s sense of security.
“What upsets me more than anything is not only the material loss, but the feeling of being unsafe in the place where we should feel most protected,” he added. “It is also seeing that fear reflected in the eyes of my family.”
He said the incident had reinforced his priorities, with the safety of his relatives more important than any possessions.
“But above all, I am increasingly convinced of one truth: there are no material possessions in this world more valuable than the lives and safety of my family,” Antony wrote.
Antony has made 10 appearances for Real Betis this season. He has provided one assist but has yet to score.
