Pape Moussa Fall has made a rapid start to the season with FC Metz, scoring seven goals in eight Ligue 2 appearances and moving to the top of the division’s scoring charts.
The 22-year-old Senegal international, who stands at 2.03m, developed at Generation Foot before moving to Belgium, where he played for RFC Seraing and RAAL La Louviere. His form in France has now made him one of the most prominent emerging forwards in Ligue 2.
Assane Diop, his former coach at Generation Foot, said in an exclusive interview with Africafoot that Fall’s rise had not come as a surprise.
The striker has been building momentum since last season and continues to attract interest from clubs across Europe. Galatasaray, Mayence, Club Bruges, Lille and FC Lorient are among the clubs reported to be monitoring him.
Fall’s progress has also strengthened the long-standing relationship between FC Metz and Generation Foot. The French club has provided a pathway for several generations of Senegalese players, including Jules Bocande, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane, Diafra Sakho, Babacar Gueye, Makhtar Ndiaye, Lamine Camara and Sadibou Sane.
After seven rounds of Ligue 2, three Africans feature in the top five of the division’s leading scorers, with Fall currently at the summit.
His performances for FC Metz have earned him his first Senegal call-up under new head coach Patrick Vieira. Fall featured in all three of the matches involved in his initial selection: the 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw with Mozambique, the 1-0 qualifying victory over Ethiopia and the 1-0 friendly win against Comoros.
He came on as a substitute in each match. However, his scoring record at club level is expected to increase competition for a starting place in the Senegal side.
The next opportunity for Fall to add to his tally will come when FC Metz visit Sochaux in the ninth round of the French Ligue 2 season.
The match has been priced at 4.31 for a Sochaux victory, 3.54 for a draw and 1.80 for an FC Metz win.
