Matuludi set for four competitions in first four Sundowns appearances

Thabang Matuludi is poised to play in four different competitions across his first four appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns after making an immediate impression at the club.

The right-back joined the Brazilians’ Chloorkop base on September 10 and has already completed three consecutive matches in separate competitions.

His debut came in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup against Al Ahli Saudi, a match Sundowns won to claim the trophy. Matuludi played 85 minutes.

He then completed the full match in the MTN8 final, helping Sundowns overcome Orlando Pirates as the Brazilians controlled the game and secured further silverware.

On Tuesday, the 27-year-old played from start to finish again in Sundowns’ 4-1 Betway Premiership victory over Richards Bay FC. His latest composed display further strengthened his position in Miguel Cardoso’s starting line-up.

Champions League debut next

Matuludi’s fourth appearance will come in the CAF Champions League this weekend, when Sundowns face Wiliete Clube Sport de Benguela in the first leg of the second qualifying round.

The Angolan club has moved the fixture 350km from its base in Benguela to the Estadio Nacional da Tundavala in Lubango. Matuludi’s first appearance in Africa’s leading club competition will therefore take place at an unfamiliar venue.

His fifth match for Sundowns could also be in a new competition. The club are due to face Marumo Gallants in the Last 16 of the Carling Knockout, although that appearance will depend on the fixture dates set by the PSL following Wednesday’s draw.

A sixth competition could then follow when Sundowns play in the CAF Super Cup on November 8.

From The Dolphins to Sundowns

Matuludi’s move to the Tshwane club has brought more than the opportunity to compete for silverware on several fronts.

At Sundowns, he has experienced playing in a side that generally enjoys more possession and attracts larger crowds than he encountered at Polokwane City. The transfer has also brought a substantial increase in his earnings.

Matuludi joined Polokwane City six years ago from Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side The Dolphins, initially on a modest salary while Rise and Shine were competing in the First Division.

His pay was improved twice during his time at Polokwane. Following his move to the capital, however, he is now earning about three times his previous salary in Limpopo.

The defender has signed a three-year contract with Sundowns, with options included. It represents a notable reward for a player who has progressed from the lower leagues to competing in several competitions for the African champions within a few months.
