Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise has come under criticism from Viking player Christopher Askeldsen after his sending-off in the German side’s 3-3 draw against the Norwegian club in the Champions League.

Olise received a red card after throwing the ball towards Zlatko Topic’s head during Tuesday’s second-round league-phase encounter, an incident that sparked reactions in Norway.

Askeldsen did not hide his frustration with the Frenchman’s actions, telling Norwegian broadcaster TV2, as reported by Foot Mercato: “When he threw the ball, I thought: What an idiot!”

The dismissal proved costly for Bayern, who were leading 3-2 when Olise was sent off but conceded an equaliser in the 90th minute to surrender two valuable points.

Olise loses his composure

The incident followed an earlier booking for Olise, who had been shown a yellow card for pulling Henrik Hegeheim’s shirt.

As players gathered around the referee, the Bayern winger threw the ball towards Topic’s head. The referee, who witnessed the incident, issued Olise a second yellow card before showing him the red card.

The dismissal left Bayern facing the closing stages with 10 men and gave Viking an opportunity to push for a result against one of Europe’s leading clubs.

Viking fight back to deny Bayern

Viking had made a strong start, taking a 2-0 lead before Bayern fought their way back into the contest.

The German side moved ahead 3-2, but it could not protect its advantage, with the Norwegian hosts finding a late equaliser in the 90th minute to secure a 3-3 draw.

The result denied Bayern victory and left them with two fewer points than they had looked set to collect before the late setback.

Askeldsen’s comments reflect the reaction to Olise’s dismissal after an incident that changed the closing stages of an entertaining European contest.
