Viking hold Bayern Munich to historic draw as Harry Kane extends Champions League scoring run
Viking secured a historic 3-3 draw with Bayern Munich in the second round of the Champions League league phase, denying the German giants victory after they had recovered from a two-goal deficit.
The Norwegian hosts made a fast start when Gianni Stensness opened the scoring in the second minute. Peter Christiansen then doubled Viking’s advantage in the 38th minute, leaving Bayern Munich 2-0 down at half-time.
Bayern responded after the interval through Harry Kane, who scored twice in the 54th and 60th minutes to bring the visitors level.
Luis Diaz completed Bayern’s turnaround by putting them 3-2 ahead in the 71st minute. However, Michael Olise was sent off three minutes later, giving Viking the opportunity to apply sustained pressure in search of an equaliser.
That pressure paid off in the 90th minute when Herman Høgen scored a late leveller to complete a 3-3 draw.
The result means Kane has now scored in nine consecutive Champions League matches. The only player previously to achieve a longer run was Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored in 11 successive games in April 2018.
Kane has the opportunity to surpass Ronaldo’s record over Bayern’s next two matches.
Bayern Munich move on to four points and sit fourth in the table, while Viking collect their first point in the Champions League and are 26th.
The opening two rounds have produced unusual pairings for both clubs. Bayern Munich have faced Norwegian opposition in each of their first two matches, while Viking have met German teams in both games.
Viking began their campaign with a 3-1 defeat by Stuttgart. Bayern Munich, meanwhile, opened with a 5-0 victory over Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt.
The match was Viking’s first appearance in the Champions League. Their result also recalls the impact made by Bodø/Glimt last season, when they defeated Manchester City and Inter at home in the exceptionally cold conditions associated with Norway.
