Champions League: Club Brugge stun Inter 4-3 as Villarreal end losing run

Club Brugge claimed a remarkable 4-3 victory over Inter at San Siro in the clubs’ first meeting in the Champions League.

The result gave the Belgian side their first points of the competition this season, while Inter suffered four consecutive defeats in the tournament for the first time in their history.

Club Brugge took the lead when Carlos Forbs won a penalty after being brought down by Hakan Calhanoglu at the end of a counter-attack. Tressoldi made no mistake from the spot.

Calhanoglu struck the crossbar as Inter looked for an equaliser, while Lautaro Martinez had a goal ruled out for offside. The Argentina forward did level before half-time, converting Federico Dimarco’s pass.

Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer denied Martinez early in the second half, but Club Brugge regained the advantage when Josep Martinez failed to reach a long ball. It fell to Tressoldi, who finished into an unguarded net.

Jan Virgili then hit the inside of the post before Forbs tested the goalkeeper. Tressoldi was first to the rebound and completed his hat-trick.

Inter reduced the deficit inside the final 10 minutes. Sommer saved Petar Sucic’s effort, but Martinez reacted quickest to the rebound to score his second goal.

The home side continued to press for an equaliser, with Sommer making further saves from Diouf and Martinez. Club Brugge then exploited the space left by Inter’s advanced defence, as Forbs released Romeo Vermant to run through and score the fourth.

Ange-Yoan Bonny added a third for Inter in stoppage time with a curling finish, but the goal could not prevent their first home defeat by a Belgian side for 56 years.

Villarreal 3-1 Napoli

Villarreal beat Napoli 3-1 at La Ceramica to end a run of seven successive Champions League defeats.

Napoli made the stronger start and went ahead in the eighth minute. Amir Rrahmani followed up after goalkeeper Luiz Junior had made an excellent save, with the ball rebounding off the crossbar.

Georges Mikautadze soon restored parity after rounding Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, before Santiago Mourino put Villarreal in front with a powerful shot in the 26th minute.

Villarreal secured the win late on when Tani Oluwaseyi controlled the ball inside the penalty area and finished with his left foot.

RB Leipzig 1-0 PSV Eindhoven

RB Leipzig earned three valuable points with a 1-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven.

The Dutch side missed the chance to take the lead when experienced forward Ivan Perisic failed to convert a penalty.

Brajan Gruda scored the only goal in the 75th minute to give Leipzig victory.
