Orlando Pirates bounce back from MTN8 final heartbreak with 3-0 thrashing of TS Galaxy

Orlando Pirates returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion, beating TS Galaxy 3-0 on Tuesday night to recover from their MTN8 final disappointment and strengthen their grip on second place in the South African Premiership.

The Buccaneers responded to Saturday’s defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns with a convincing performance at Orlando Stadium, extending their winning run in the league to six matches without conceding a goal.

Boitumelo Radiopane opened the scoring in the first half before substitute Tshepang Moremi and promising midfielder Simphiwe Masilela struck after the break to seal a comfortable victory for Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side.

The result leaves Pirates one point behind leaders Sundowns, who defeated Richards Bay FC 4-1 in Durban on Tuesday, with the Buccaneers still having a game in hand.

Radiopane breaks the deadlock

TS Galaxy started brightly and created the more notable opportunities during the opening 15 minutes, but Victor Letsoalo, Sedwyn George and Junior Zindoga failed to convert their chances.

Pirates gradually settled into the contest and capitalised on a defensive error to take the lead in the 18th minute.

Appollis seized on a miscalculation by Galaxy goalkeeper Tape Ira before setting up Radiopane, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

The visitors attempted to respond almost immediately, exposing gaps in the Pirates defence with a forward move. However, goalkeeper Sipho Chaine reacted quickly, leaving his line to clear the danger before Galaxy could draw level.

Chaine’s intervention proved important as Pirates maintained their advantage and grew in confidence, having weathered the visitors’ early pressure.

The opening goal shifted the momentum towards the hosts, who carried their lead into the interval with another clean sheet in sight.

Moremi and Masilela seal dominant victory

Pirates wasted little time extending their advantage after the restart, with Moremi finding the net in the 50th minute.

The substitute attacker finished from close range to put the Buccaneers in a commanding position, leaving Galaxy with a difficult task if they were to rescue anything from the encounter.

The home side suffered a setback moments later when Appollis was stretchered off with an injury.

His condition will be a concern for Ouaddou, whose team face a demanding schedule across the Premiership, Carling Knockout and CAF Champions League in the coming weeks.

Despite losing Appollis, Pirates continued to press forward and eventually added a third goal in the 76th minute.

Masilela capped another incisive attacking move, cutting through the Galaxy defence before finishing to put the result beyond doubt.

The young midfielder continues to impress whenever he receives an opportunity, adding another encouraging performance to his growing reputation within the Pirates squad.

Pirates pile pressure on Sundowns as Galaxy struggle

The victory provides a timely response to the disappointment of losing the MTN8 final to Sundowns and keeps Pirates firmly in contention for the Premiership title.

Their defensive record has been particularly impressive, with the six consecutive league victories without conceding highlighting the consistency they have established in recent weeks.

Chaine has been central to that run, providing crucial interventions when opponents have threatened to breach the Pirates defence.

Sundowns remain top of the standings following their 4-1 victory over Richards Bay, but Pirates have an opportunity to close the gap further with their game in hand.

For TS Galaxy, the defeat extends a worrying spell of four consecutive league matches without a win.

The visitors were coached by Essau Mtsweni in the absence of former coach Bernard Parker, who has been away from the bench while dealing with personal issues.

Galaxy showed early attacking intent but lacked the finishing quality required to trouble Pirates consistently. Their defensive lapses also proved costly against a side that punished their mistakes and took its opportunities after the break.

While Pirates can look ahead with renewed confidence, Galaxy must find a way to halt their slide if they are to revive their league campaign.
