Pau Cubarsi backs Lamine Yamal to win Ballon d’Or
Pau Cubarsí has backed Barcelona teammate Lamine Yamal to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, describing the 19-year-old as the best player in the world.
With less than two weeks to go before the award ceremony, Cubarsi was asked about Yamal’s chances ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League match against Galatasaray. He made no attempt to hide his admiration for the winger.
“I think everyone can see it, he is the best player in the world,” Cubarsí said. “Even if he says it himself, others see it on the pitch through what he shows and the ability he has. He knows it and everyone knows it. He is the best player in the world and he deserves the Ballon d’Or, of course.”
Cubarsi, who was part of Spain’s 2026 World Cup-winning squad and won the tournament’s best young player award, is also nominated for the prize. He believes his own season gives him a case, although he sees Yamal as the clear frontrunner.
“And yes, I could also be in the running with the World Cup I had and the season I had, but I am a bit calmer, while he is more media-focused,” he added.
Barcelona will hope Yamal can continue his form when they face Galatasaray on Tuesday.
