Zamalek coach Moataz Gamal to travel to Rwanda for Champions League clash despite back surgery
Zamalek coach Moataz Gamal is expected to travel to Rwanda on Wednesday for their CAF Champions League showdown against Rwandan Army despite undergoing surgery.
Gamal underwent a procedure at a hospital on Monday after experiencing back pain, with a source within the Egyptian club providing an update on his condition.
According to reports, the Zamalek coach has been struggling with the problem for approximately a year and recently underwent injections in his vertebrae on the advice of his treating physician.
Despite the medical concerns, Gamal is expected to join the Zamalek delegation in Rwanda on Wednesday as preparations continue for their continental assignment.
Gamal would travel ahead of Friday’s first-leg encounter against the Rwandan Army in the round of 32 of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
He was present at the Cairo derby on Sunday, when Zamalek suffered a 2–0 defeat to arch-rivals Al Ahly in the sixth round of the Egyptian Premier League.
The result was a setback for the White Knights, who will now look to respond positively in African competition as they begin their two-legged tie against the Rwandan side.
The first leg is scheduled for Friday in Rwanda, with the return fixture set to take place at Cairo International Stadium on October 24.
Gamal’s expected trip will be an important step in maintaining his involvement with the team as Zamalek prepare for the encounter, although his medical condition remains a key consideration.
