Bruno Savio reflects on Al Ahly spell and recalls decisive Zamalek goal

Bruno Savio says he wished he had stayed at Al Ahly for longer, while recalling the goal he scored against Zamalek as one of the defining moments of his time with the club.

The Brazilian forward said his limited playing time during his only season in Cairo was down to the technical decisions of the coaching staff, led at the time by Marcel Koller.

Savio, speaking to Al Nahar channel, said he still follows Egyptian football closely and retains strong connections with the country.

“I follow Egyptian football very closely. I have many friends and many good memories, and I love Egyptian football very much,” he said. “I thank the fans for their support. I felt as though I was part of the Egyptian family.”

He also looked back on Al Ahly’s victory over Zamalek in the Egyptian Super Cup, when he scored.

“I clearly remember the moment I scored against Zamalek and we won the Super Cup,” Savio said. “I have many wonderful memories that I will never forget for the rest of my life.”

Asked whether he had struggled to adapt to life in Egypt, the 32-year-old rejected that suggestion.

“I felt as if I was at home in Egypt,” he said. “When you take on a new experience, you need time to adapt, and I was trying to do that. However, perhaps I played in only a limited number of matches because of the manager’s view.”

Savio described his time with Al Ahly as a significant chapter in his career, although he admitted he had wanted a more regular role.

“Without doubt, my experience with Al Ahly was very special,” he said. “I spent an unforgettable year at a big club with a great team, but I did not have the opportunity to play consistently as I had hoped. Certainly, I would have liked to stay at the club for longer.”

Savio made 18 appearances for Al Ahly, scoring two goals and providing three assists.

During his time with the club, he won the Egypt Cup, the Egyptian Super Cup, the CAF Champions League and the Egyptian Premier League.

He joined Al Ahly in the summer of 2022 and left after one season.

Savio’s most recent spell came with Brazilian club Goias, where he had a short period in January before departing in June. He is currently without a club.
