Marc Guehi explains leadership role at Manchester City
Marc Guehi says he has never viewed himself as a natural leader, despite earning a place in Manchester City’s leadership group alongside Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland and Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The England defender joined City in January and quickly became a regular at the back. Speaking to UEFA before the club’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain, he shared his view that leadership starts with setting the right example.
“The first thing is leading by example,” Guehi said, explaining that players should be prepared to do what they ask of their teammates. He also stressed the value of being genuine, noting that people can recognise when someone is not being themselves.
“I’ve never thought of myself in that way,” he said of leadership. Guehi believes others noticed those qualities in him, while he simply focused on doing things in a way that felt right.
The defender added that being selected for the group showed he had done something well, but he still wants to develop and learn more in the role. His approach, he said, is to continue being himself and build on the habits that earned the trust of his teammates.
Guehi has played five games, scored one goal, and assisted one in the Premier League this season.
