Betway Premiership: Four key tests for the leading pack as league action returns

The Betway Premiership returns on Tuesday with Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs all in action as the leading quartet look to strengthen their positions.

Sundowns top the table with 20 points, one ahead of Pirates. AmaZulu’s impressive start has taken them to third on 16 points, while Kaizer Chiefs are fourth with 13.

Although the season remains at an early stage, Tuesday’s programme should offer a useful indication of whether the teams at the top can maintain their momentum after the break.

Can Sundowns maintain their perfect pace?

Sundowns have set the early standard, remaining unbeaten after six wins and two draws.

They will expect to take maximum points against Richards Bay, who are 14th with three points and are still waiting for their first league victory. That apparent advantage also means Sundowns will have little room for error, with any dropped points likely to attract attention.

A win would move the leaders to 23 points and ensure they remain the side everyone else is chasing. The key issue is whether they can reproduce the consistency that took them to the top before the league paused.

Nuno Santos of Mamelodi Sundowns scored for the club during the Fifa African Asian Pacific Cup against Al Ahli FC at Loftus Versfeld last month.

How will Pirates respond after the MTN8 final?

Orlando Pirates v TS Galaxy, Orlando Stadium, 19:30

Pirates face the most challenging turnaround of the four leading teams after meeting Sundowns in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

The Sea Robbers went into that match second, unbeaten and with a game in hand over Sundowns. Whatever the result in Durban, they must quickly switch their focus back to the league.

Victory in the cup final could give Pirates added confidence, while defeat would require an immediate response. The short gap between the final and this fixture will test whether the defending league champions can move smoothly from cup competition to their title defence.

Can AmaZulu remain in the title discussion?

Durban City v AmaZulu, Chatsworth Stadium, 19:30

AmaZulu have emerged as an unexpected presence near the top, with five wins, one draw and one defeat from their opening matches.

It is too soon to describe them as serious title contenders, but their form has made them one of the most interesting teams in the early standings.

Their next opponents, Durban City, have seven points from seven matches. The club announced Eric Tinkler as its new coach last week after parting company with former Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef.

A victory would lift AmaZulu to 19 points and keep them firmly among the leading sides. A defeat or draw could give the chasing teams an opportunity to reduce the gap.

Can Chiefs turn draws into wins?

Kaizer Chiefs v Stellenbosch, FNB Stadium, 19:30

Kaizer Chiefs are fourth and unbeaten after seven league matches, but their record consists of three wins and four draws.

To remain within reach of the leaders, the Amakhosi must begin converting those draws into victories. Stellenbosch are seventh on nine points, meaning Chiefs cannot assume the three points will be secured.

Victory would take Chiefs to 16 points and could return them to the leading group. The question is whether their unbeaten beginning can develop into a stronger challenge.

With the top four all playing on the same night, Tuesday will provide an early assessment of the title race. Sundowns and Pirates also have to manage the effects of their MTN8 final only three days earlier, but all four clubs have positions worth defending.
