Manchester City hand Liverpool joint-heaviest Premier League defeat at Anfield

Manchester City condemned Liverpool to a 3-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday, matching the home side’s joint-heaviest loss in Premier League history.

Liverpool had never previously been beaten by more than three goals at home in the competition. Their heaviest defeats had been two 4-1 losses against Chelsea in 2005 and Manchester City in 2021.

The latest result is Liverpool’s third 0-3 home defeat in the Premier League. They previously lost by that score to West Ham in 2015 and Nottingham Forest in 2025.

The defensive collapse came after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute following a second yellow card. City then scored three times in a 13-minute spell.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 65th minute, before Belgium international Jeremy Doku doubled City’s advantage three minutes later. France forward Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute.

The victory strengthened Manchester City’s position at the top of the Premier League. They have won all six of their matches and have 18 points, while Liverpool remain ninth on nine points.

The match was City’s first since an independent commission found the club had breached Premier League financial rules over a nine-year period. Manchester City have appealed against the ruling.

Liverpool’s defeat leaves them facing their biggest home setback in the competition since the two 4-1 results, although the margin was no greater than in their previous 0-3 losses.

Manchester City will next host Paris Saint-Germain at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday in the first round of the Champions League.
